Port St. Charles Barbados

For over 2 years Port St Charles was my home. I had decided to move from Montreal, Canada to the Caribbean and was very comfortable with Barbados. The direct flights from Montreal were a bonus, but it was the friendly locals and year round warm weather that did it for me. Barbados isn’t a cheap island to live on, finding reasonably affordable accommodations wasn’t easy. I looked into Port St. Charles and thought for the price, it wasn’t cheap, but I was willing to pay a bit of a premium to get what was important to me….1. security, 2. close to the beach, 3. full service and access to a gym. When you compare a condo here vs. rental rates in New York, London, Tokyo etc.. rent at Port St Charles is good.

Most of the villas at Port St. Charles overlook the lagoon. You’re never more than a few minutes walk to the beach where friendly staff like Nemar are there to help set up beach chairs and umbrellas. This is where I would lay for hours and read…..not having to worry about carrying beach chairs or planting an umbrella was amazing! After reading, I would often hop on my bike and head back to my condo for lunch but sometimes would opt to treat myself by heading over to the Port St Charles yacht club. The staff there was also very friendly, Elvis, Desmond, et all always welcomed me with warm smiles. I would eat lunch and charge it to my room….just like a hotel. Not having to carry a wallet was another bonus, I could and would roam around the Port St Charles for days only wearing my surf shorts :)

Some days I would venture over to neighboring Speightstown to pick up the essentials like milk, cans of tuna, bread and eggs. It’s a small local town that doesn’t offer a large variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. If I wanted fresher produce I would either take the bus or taxi to Holetown and head to the Supercenter grocery store. I made sure to do buy in bulk because a round trip taxi ride was over $40 US….not cheap.

Port St Charles is a community that’s ideal for ex-pats looking for a safe and quiet place to live. Located on the Northern West coast, there are no worries about traffic, it’s a secluded area. Like any secluded area, it’s nice to get out and head to the South coast to grab a movie, hit a beach bar or try a new restaurant on Barbados. I would rather live a little further from the action knowing that when I went home it was going to be quiet than living right in an area where tourists are always partying…that’s the old man in me talking lol

I had high speed internet and direct TV so I wasn’t missing out on the basics. Port St. Charles offers rental space for small offices, another great option to have if you plan to work on the island and want to be close to home. Overall I would strongly recommend Port St Charles for older professionals. Stephen and Terry have done a great job running this development, I always felt welcome, safe and hope to one day return to what I called home.
