Chris' Place - There is No Place Like Home

“Good cooks never lack friends.” – Author Unknown

BARBADOS - We all know that infamous line from ‘The Wizard of Oz’ when Dorothy says, “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home.” Before this week, I may have agreed with that statement, however, I now beg to differ. A visit to Chris’ Place in St. James is like walking into a large family kitchen. From the moment you enter, you feel like you are home.

A family-run business, Chris’ Place has been in operation since 1981. The welcoming blue and yellow building is divided into a small bar/restaurant and an adjoining variety store. Christopher, the father, runs the bar and food service; Maureen, affectionately known by some as ‘Mums,’ manages the mini grocery/variety store and the two daughters, Kristina and Marissa, assist where possible.

Open every day, Chris’ place attracts locals and tourists alike. Their popularity is unwavering and a quick Google search hints at what their secret to success could be – the RIBS! Described as ‘unbelievable,’ by the world famous Zagat dining guide, the ribs at Chris’ place have attained rave reviews and that’s not the only thing that has people buzzing. They are one of the few remaining places that make their own chips (or French fries as the Americans would say)! The potatoes are cut and fried to order and are the perfect accompaniment to the fried chicken or fish (trust me, I know). Other offerings include traditional Bajan fare: baked chicken, macaroni pie (this is not like any mac and cheese you have ever had), local flying fish and ‘cou cou’.

The company is just as good as the food. Everyone who visits is encouraged to sit and have a drink at the bar which is adorned with English Premier League football scarves, pictures of cricket legends (including Sir Garfield Sobers and a young Lara) and other memorabilia. Regular events such as Karaoke and Heineken promotions are also a major attraction. This is the weekend hotspot!

It is important to mention that even with their ever growing popularity, Chris’ Place has remained true to its roots. Every dish is prepared with a smile and the prices are definitely something to smile about. So if you are looking for good food (great portions) and a meal with friends that is easy on the pocket, look no further than Chris’ Place, the not-so-secret gem in Rock Dundo, St. James.
