MONTREAL- Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to sit and have a beer (on the house of course!) with Guy Payette, charming and quirky owner of Le Drugstore. Guy dons a different glasses & tie combo everyday (and is the proud owner of 30 such combinations). While sitting on one of Drugstore's two outdoor patios, overlooking a beautiful view of Montreal, Payette explained the history and place of Drugstore in Montreal's diverse Gay Village. He even showed me the 'beer room' for the complex's entire weekly beer consumption. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to take any of the barrels home.
Let's start with some "wow" facts before we get into it. Le Drugstore is the biggest lesbian bar in North America. wow. Le Drugstore has 7 bars, which includes two outdoor patio bars. wow. The original building was a bar named "La Taverne du Village" which was licensed in 1909. The license is still under that name! cool.
Apart from achieving 'oldest' and 'biggest' accolades, Drugstore is a fun experience with a variety of options.
While you might not get the full-blown club atmosphere at Drugstore (because it is more of a mega bar than a club), with 6+ floors, you will not run out of things to do. Here you can -- long breath -- drink, dance, watch a hockey game, play football, watch a drag show, play pool/foosball, have some eats, look at some treats, every day from 10 am to 3 am. And rest assured, if its bumpin' and grindin' you're after, Drugstore has got you covered.
If you want to experience a diverse and gay Montreal, then look no further than Le Drugstore.
