Artevelas Candles, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

PLAYA DEL CARMEN - I love candles. I love how they make spaces seem clean and well designed, and I also love that they can replace electrical lights. The combination of energy consciousness and great lighting can make almost anyone seem more sexy and spiritual. This is probably why many of my guy friends had better luck with women when Playa was a small village with lots of candlelight.

Anyone who’s spent time here knows that candles had a very important role in Playa when it was smaller. The electricity was unreliable, and in many places there was no light without a generator. Local spots along the beach often used candles on tables or in the sand to light their public spaces or the way along a path. Since it’s often windy they used lanterns to protect the candles, and it was from this that Artevelas got their start in Playa.

Artevelas is a store on First Avenue, but they also have a factory where they produce projects for restaurants, hotels, and larger design projects. In Spanish, ArteVelas means art candles, and that is exactly what the team produces. The concept is simple: they produce wax lanterns of all shapes, colors, and sizes, and a small candle can be put inside. These tea light candles can be replaced, but the lantern remains, unmelted.

You can go to the Artevelas on Frist Avenue and request a product in almost any size or color. They'll also hand-design original pieces and install electric blubs with low light. If you’re working on an interior design project or have a special event, like a wedding, Artevelas is the place to start. Once you visit the shop you’ll quickly recognize their work all over town. Lighting so indispensible, sustainable, and nearly indestructible never looked as pretty as Artevelas candles on the beach in Playa.
