Posada Mariposa, Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

PLAYA DEL CARMEN - Posada Mariposa is located in older building on 5th Avenue, between 24th and 26th Streets. The building was constructed in a traditional style in the late 1990’s, as La Quinta was expanded northward. The current management completed a full renovating in 2009, and the finished product is a simple, cozy posada that is centered on a beautiful courtyard garden.

This spot caught my attention several years ago because it is discreetly tucked away behind a thatched entrance on 5th Avenue. The location is in the midst of a variety of quiet stores and small restaurants, making it a quieter spot than many areas on this stretch of the street.

As you enter the hotel there’s a very pretty sitting area and a gorgeous garden with huge trees, long vines, and beautiful tropical flowers. The building has three stories and was designed to give the rooms privacy. There are standards rooms on the first floors, while the upper two floors have deluxe rooms and suites with full kitchens. There's wifi throughout the hotel, and, while wifi can be a challenge for many hotels, they are currently working to ensure that the reception and speed is adequate in all of the rooms

The rooms at Mariposa are very simple, clean, and comfortable. The suites have a living area, full kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, and in my opinion they are fabulous deal for small families or groups. He hotel itself is small, quaint, a bit rustic, and has a very traditional Playense feel, with plenty of dark wood, neutral colors, and natural light.

The location of hotel is one of its greatest highlights -- one of my hands-down favorite areas of the Quinta. It’s within three blocks of Mamita’s Beach Club, and guests of the Mariposa are offered a generous discount at the club. Its also located on a prime spot on the Quinta near popular restaurants like El Deis, Chez Celine, El Carnicero, and Yaxche.

You can contact the hotel directly through their website for reservations and special rates. During many weeks in the high season they may be booked well in advanced, so it’s a good idea to contact them directly about lodging options and availability.
