This is a great alternative to the regular club scene on St. Laurent

If Baldwin Barmacie was located somewhere in the plateau or maybe even the Old Port, it would be the perfect bar. As it is, it is still REALLY good, but gets weighed down a bit by the snob-factor of its neighborhood locals, depending on the night. I don’t like pretentious bars, or more specifically, the pretentious people who turn perfectly nice bars pretentious, and I worry that Baldwin Barmacie teeters on that precarious edge sometimes. For the most part, though, this is a great alternative to the regular club scene on St. Laurent, and the drinks are certainly yummy enough to merit a trip “up” here.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised

I’d never been to Med before my visit in January ’09, and expected something a bit snobby and pretentious. While the people were beautiful and some there clearly had the holier-than-thou look on their face, overall I was pleasantly surprised. The service, which doesn’t have the best reputation in the city, was friendly and skilled for the most part, though the 3 bus boys who came over every few minutes to try to clear our very unfinished plates were a bit annoying. I get the feeling that I would have felt a bit out of place on a busier Saturday night, but for a few drinks and some appetizers (which were really good and generous), it was just right.

Jazz lovers will still be pleased

I can’t say I’m really a fan of jazz, but this festival really isn’t about jazz. If the weather is nice, there’s no better way to spend a day in Montreal than wandering around the closed-off areas of the jazz fest in the summertime, catching a bit of a free concert and moving on. The city gets really busy during the fest and has a great buzz – there’s even a lot of stuff to do for kids. I’ve seen a bunch of the free outdoor shows and they were a mix of hits and misses, but you can’t ever go wrong with the vibe of the big close-out show, no matter who is playing.

See a gala or the Nasty Show

Montreal is a festival city and Just for Laughs is one of the year’s top events. I’ve been to a few shows at the fest, and am rarely disappointed. The galas are great, since you usually get to say a semi-big name as host – often someone who’s not your typical comedian – plus enough acts to ensure at least a few LOL moments. The dirtiest, most politically incorrect shows like the “Nasty Show” usually get the best reviews, but those book up really fast. I found the free outdoor stuff that the fest offers to be mostly tame (good for kids, I guess) compared to the hilarity that happens indoors. Just book your tickets early!

Nothing like a terrasse in Montreal!

As far as lounges go in Montreal, Suite 701 has all the right bits and pieces – cute guys (and girls), good drinks, decent music, nice atmosphere. It’s not my favorite bar, but a good way to mix up the week if you’re tired of the typical clubby feel. When it’s really worth a trip is in the summertime, especially around 8 or 9, when the sun goes down. A drink up there on a nice day, with the views…nothing like it!

Great alternative to a typical club

I’ve been going to Santos since it opened and think it’s a great alternative to the typical club or lounge with good food, music and drinks rolled in one. If you’re visiting from out of town, this is a great spot to meet and mingle with the locals, as tourists tend to flock north towards the club scene on Crescent Street and St. Laurent. Just don’t expect to bar hop if you don’t like it – there’s not too much else around. My only complaint here is that it can get quite crowded and tough to get in, if you don’t arrive early.

A weird spot, but worth checking out.

Wunderbar is a strange spot. It’s in a weird location…not walkable to the main club areas of Crescent or St. Laurent…and isn’t great for dancing (too crowded) or talking (too loud), yet there’s still something about it that keeps people, including me, coming back. The mix of people you get here is always a refreshing change from clubs on St. Laurent – a bit more upscale – and the atmosphere feels very VIP. Don’t go out of your way, but Wunderbar is definitely worth a try after a 5 a 7 and/or dinner in the Financial district, which is getting busier all the time with great restaurants like Holder. Just be sure to set aside some cash; drinks are pricey!

I’m not a gambler, but I still love going to the casino on occasion. Weird? Maybe. But when 3am rolls around, the bars close and you’re not in the mood to go home, this 24-hour option is as good as any, plus it’s free to get in! Stretch $20 out on the slot machines and you can kill a few hours easily, if only on the people-watching around you. Montreal’s casino gets all kinds, from the uber-moneyed high rollers who head to the big tables, to 20-somethings like me just out to have a good time and try their luck, to those weird old ladies in fur coats who (in my opinion) should be in bed at 4am!

This place is pretty wild...

I’ve been to the W Montreal a few times – eaten at its restaurant, danced in its clubs, and seen a few rooms. This place is pretty wild. Its pretty fitting that a sexy, nightclub city like Montreal would craft its W just like this and fill it with beautiful people. Besides the image, there’s the service and experience: the free yoga classes in the park across the street, for example, or the special room service menu for your dog or cat. In its niche (young, trendy, urban) there’s no other hotel like it in the city. I can’t see my Mom liking it, you know, but I don’t think the W really cares that much.

Like something ripped from a design magazine.

St. Paul’s rooms are like something ripped right out of a design magazine. I visited recently and stayed a few years ago, so I’ve seen a few different suites, and each one has been really cool and unique in its own way. Some have gauzy curtains around the bed and some have these super-funky rose couches. Overall, I didn’t quite get the whole “Fire and Ice” idea that the hotel’s design apparently adheres to, though the whole scheme works really well regardless. The bar on the main floor is a must-see, especially when the locals roll in for drinks after work. I can see some cool young couples staying here or a trendy young businessman. Kids would probably feel out of place.

Sofitel is the whole package!

Sofitel Montreal is the whole package. I visited this newish hotel in October of 2008 and it was love at first sight. The Sofitel smells good – seriously – and its design really celebrates Montreal, in little ways and big, like the huge colorful rug filled with hockey scenes in the lobby. Not what you’d expect from a chic downtown hotel, but it works. Everyone is also extremely friendly and helpful in that refined way. This is the place where you’d imagine a stylish European jetsetter would stay in Montreal.
