Don't let the 18th century look of this former insurance building fool you — the Place d'Armes is one of the most fully contemporary places to stay in Montreal. Billing itself as a "hotel and suites" destination, Place d'Armes caters equally to the corporate and leisure crowd, filling its rooms with a combination of somber but trendy furniture and funky details. Think dark leathers with pea-green walls.
The details may be Place d'Armes strong suit. You'll notice the hotel's distinct, pleasant smell the moment you walk in; that scent was custom-designed by the its marketing arm to match the hotel's own brand of sweet-smelling toiletries. There's the RainSpa, with its own steamy, eucalyptus-infused hammam. For the best part, though, look up — way up, to Place d'Armes rooftop, where an L shaped terrace bar and grill takes advantage of the hotel's amazing location. In summer-obsessed, nightlife-loving Montreal, that's something akin to hitting the jackpot.

Request a room high up to get the best views...
I didn’t get a chance to stay at Le Place d’Armes, unfortunately, but took a tour in September/08. For something like girls weekend or romantic couples getaway, this would be the perfect spot. Place d’Armes is in a great location at the edge of the Old Port, so you’re walking distance to pretty much anywhere downtown. There’s lots of nightlife in the area, but you’re also treated to one of the best bars in town right at the hotel – Suite 701, which has a terrace open in the summer with great views in all directions. When it comes to the rooms, request something a little higher up to get the best views of the area.
