Wunderbar

Old Montreal | $$$ | Website

Tucked into the lobby of Montreal’s fun and funky W Hotel is Wunderbar, an entity of its own that attracts equal parts hotel guests and Montreal hipsters. If you’re looking for one, this stylish favorite is a definite alternative to the regular club scene in Montreal, located in the financial area south of the main nightclub drags. It is a small but sexy space, designed to kill and usually crowded with bankers and beauties swaying to a combination of club currents and house tunes. Don’t expect to dance the night away at Wunderbar, however – space is at a premium and doesn’t lend itself to the kind of getting down you might be accustomed to in this party-loving city. If you’re content with checking out the gorgeous patrons and staff, while sipping a strong and unique drink (the custom martinis and mojitos – try the maple! – are famous), then this is the place.

Wednesday is the night to check out Wunderbar. Note that there is no strict dress code, per se, but people tend to glam it up here.

Perfect for the Trendy Traveler

If you’re a trendy traveler, this is definitely a place you need to check out. Wednesday nights are big with locals, dress up and head out for a few martinis while enjoying some house tunes. I like Wunderbar, it’s small enough that you feel like you’ve been invited to a private party and the crowd tends to be a bit older which can also make for a great evening if you’re looking to meet young professionals.

Partying at a trendy hotel is nothing new for international travelers but in Montreal, not many hotels or the Casino, has truly invested in making their respective bars / lounges the place to be when going out. The W Montreal got it right with its Wunderbar….get your wallets out, it’s not the cheapest place to go out but it’s worth it once in a while….try the Wunderbar.

My Favorite Bar in Montreal!

There’s something about Wunderbar that stands out from the rest of Montreal’s basic nightlife. Maybe because it’s not situated on the main Montreal drag, St. Laurent, (which now caters to mostly rowdy 18 – 25 yr olds) maybe because it caters to both trendy tourists and locals, or perhaps because it’s got the kinky mirrors on the ceilings, Whatever -Whenever the case, Wunderbar concocts smashing lichee martinis, and has excellent tunes pumping throughout the night.

W – Wunderbar – Wednesday. Follow the “W” theme and be aware that it’s extremely difficult, next to impossible to get into the bar on a Wednesday night, unless you have some “ins” with the security at the door (hey that’s your business), or if you make a reservation well in advance. Just call the front desk of the hotel and mention you want to put your name on the guest list for the W on wednesday night. Obviously, if you’re a guest at the hotel, you’re automatically granted immediate access to the bar without a reservation.

In addition to the weekend, Thursday night’s 5 @ 7 is also bumping as it caters to the Montreal yuppy crowd and carries out a respectable, trendy party throughout the night.

Wunderbar is a definite must see & do!!!

Pure Party Review #4

Hello Everyone, and welcome back to another review by your one and only Montreal Pure Party! The W, as you can see by the reviews above is a pretty trendy place in Montreal. It is one of those places where the “be seen” crowd tends to go for a nice cocktail and some good tunes. The bar is situated in Old Montreal, which has become the new Hot Spot for all Montreal Night life. The W Wunder Bar is the one place that has been around for a long time and will not be going anywhere anytime soon.
If you are coming to Montreal and have a very High budget of spending money and of course like to “Pure Party” you will find the elite of Montrealers here aged 25 and up. It is a place where women come to play and men come to hunt…not that I know anything about that of course!
No need to get there too early unless its a Wednesday night!

A weird spot, but worth checking out.

Wunderbar is a strange spot. It’s in a weird location…not walkable to the main club areas of Crescent or St. Laurent…and isn’t great for dancing (too crowded) or talking (too loud), yet there’s still something about it that keeps people, including me, coming back. The mix of people you get here is always a refreshing change from clubs on St. Laurent – a bit more upscale – and the atmosphere feels very VIP. Don’t go out of your way, but Wunderbar is definitely worth a try after a 5 a 7 and/or dinner in the Financial district, which is getting busier all the time with great restaurants like Holder. Just be sure to set aside some cash; drinks are pricey!
